For today’s post, I thought I would do something different and share my current hair care routine. I’ve never really had a hair routine but recently I’ve been trying to look after my hair, reduce the damage and try and bring my curls back.
As well as the curls, I’ve been trying to keep up with hair cuts, colour and styling my hair more so it doesn’t look like a frizzy mess. However, with colouring and using heat on the hair comes damage; this is why I’ve realised looking after your hair is just as important as skincare and self care. So, if you’re looking for a sign or some inspiration on what to use, how to use it or just to look after your hair more in general and create a routine for yourself, then this is my current routine.
Pre-Shower Treatments + Oils:
Starting off, we have the products and tools I use prior to stepping into the shower. I don’t use these products every time I wash my hair, but these are for the days that I think my hair could use a little more love. I feel like everyone and their mum uses a rosemary oil and the two I have are the Nature Spells Authentic Black Castor Oil with Rosemary and the Larry King Rosemary Oil.
When I’m doing an oil treatment, I do like to use my Derma Scalp Roller to help the oils penetrate deeper into the skin (apparently this helps them work better and more efficiently). Although the Nature Spells one is just used as a treatment, I like to use the Larry King one after styling as well, to keep everything in place and to look more sleek and shiny.
When it comes to Hair Masks, I’ll be honest, I do just use any one. I have so many in my Hair draw in my dressing table but, for now, I have been using the Pantene Pro V Bond Repair one. If I’m not using this prior to my shampoos, I sometime use this in place of a conditioner. I am really liking this, it makes my hair feel a lot softer stepping out of the shower and helps with brushing too. If I use this mask as a treatment before washing my hair, I will usually leave it on the ends for a day (or at least a few hours) to make sure I get the most out of it.
In the Shower:
Onto Shampoos. I love choosing a new shampoo to try as I have thick, wavy/curly, prone to oily, coloured and dry hair so it needs all the help it can get. Just over a month ago I finished the L’Oreal Professional Scalp Advanced Shampoo for oily hair and, although it helped clean, clear and detoxify the scalp, I found it made the ends a lot more dry. At the moment I am alternating between the Colour Wow Colour Security and the L’Oreal professionals Silver Shampoo. I am actually much preferring these, not only am I protecting and prolonging the colour but it feels a lot less dry post-wash and I’m lasting at least 3 days between washes (even if with a little help from Dry Shampoo).
I like to buy my shampoos in bulk as, not only is it cheaper, but I think I use quite a bit of it at a time. I like to double shampoo (sometimes even triple if really needed) to try and help it last as long as possible between washes but, to be honest that still sometimes is no more than 3 days.
I like to go over with the Tangle Teezer Exfoliator/Massager Brush as it help to loosen and remove anything sitting on the scalp, any left over product and the oils and mainly just for a deeper clean. I have been using this for over a year now (maybe even 2) and I wouldn’t be without it.
Post-Shower + Styling Products:
Once I hop out the shower, I pop in some of the Give Me Four Curls Leave-in Conditioner. I don’t use a conditioner in the shower as I find them very heavy and weigh the hair down, so a product like this helps, not only to brush out the hair, but to also addd a bit of hydration and shine to it.
The brush I use is the Cantu Smooth Thick Hair Paddle Brush, as I have so much hair on my head and it can be really hard to brush out. This brush has been a godsend and makes brushing my hair so quick and easy. I still like to section my hair as I brush just to make sure no knots are left behind but, it doesn’t even need me to do that. I think this must’ve also contributed to my hair being healthier as it doesn’t tug or feel like it’s breaking my hair, especially as I brush mine wet which can be bad for the hair but, with curly/wave hair, needs must.
After the knots have been combed through, the hair is still sopping wet and waiting for the finishing touches, it’s time for the heat products. Now, I have a few that are on rotation as well as sometimes using them together which include the ColourWow Dream Coat, Tresemme Heat Protector and the Beauty Works 10 in 1 Miracle Spray. I find they all work the same by smoothing, protecting, seeing to the frizz, hydrating, detangling; you name it, they do it. although the Tresemme one isn’t great, I still like to use it as an extra bit of protection.
I have recently been trying out the ColourWow Kale Cocktail and, although it is a bit too early to have an opinion yet, so far so good. The ColourWow Products are Heat Activated so they have to be used with heat, but I do sometimes use the Beauty Works spray on its own.
I really don’t get on with dry shampoos but, as someone who starts going oily just a day after washing, I really need to. I have been trying a few new ones over the last 6 months or so and the current one I’m using is the Moroccan-Oil Light Tones. First off, it feels very light on the hair, it smells amazing, I don’t find you get the powdery layer and it does seem to give me a bit of volume as well as feeling fresher. I was unsure how a dry shampoo with Argan Oil in it would work, but I’m pleasantly surprised with it.
When it comes to my styling tools, I’m pretty simple. I have the Lullabellz Thicc Curls curler, a Babylis straighter and a Babyliss Hair Dryer. I do usually stick to just loose curls as my natural hair has a mind of its own; sometimes it’s super curly, others it’s wavy and sometimes it has no structure at all. If I’m trying to avoid heat, I have used the Lullabellz Heatless Curlers but, now my hairs shorter, it doesn’t work so well as it doesn’t all wrap into it. I am trying to use less heat on my hair whilst also trying to keep my hair from looking a mess, so to find a balance I recently bought the Shark Air Styler (a dupe for the Dyson Airwrap) in the Black Friday sales. I am yet to use it, but we will see and I’m sure you’ll see me talk about this soon.
And that, in quite a big nutshell, is my hair care routine. You may look at this like a lot of products to use, which yes it is, but I don’t use every product every time I wash my hair. I do switch between different products for when I’m keeping my hair natural or styling it with heat and the masks I do as and when I feel my hair needs some real TLC.
I actually really enjoyed writing this one so I hope you enjoyed the read. I still have some really exciting posts coming throughout the rest of Blogmas, so I will see you in the next one.
