Gone are the days where we would spend our nights sipping wine and cocktails at a bar al-fresco. Why? It’s autumn, of course! The air cools, the sun goes down earlier, the plants start to wilt and hibernate. What an excuse for us to coordinate a cosy autumn night in with our partners, our friends, or even ourselves. Here’s how I like to get into the spirit of the season.
Loungewear
What is an autumn night in without comfy loungewear or pyjamas? I always find that autumn is the perfect time to restock the pyjama drawer, as we’re just a little more inclined to dig out the fluffy socks. There’s nothing worse than pulling on a tatty pair of bottoms from last year, stained with sweet and sour sauce, sporting a hole in the crotch, with sagging elastic. No one can have a cosy autumn night in wearing that!
Personally, I’m a huge fan of cuffed bottoms with a matching vest top. I like to layer up with a hoodie or dressing gown, and stick on a pair of fluffy socks, or bootie slippers.
Decor
We all know that scented candles are perfect for creating a little ambiance. The candles might have been stashed away for the summer, or have been fresher, fruitier scents, but now is the time for the autumnal smells. Think cinnamon, hazelnut, pumpkin spice – those nuttier, woodier choices.
Dim the lights and set up your candles. Perhaps even thread a few fairy lights around your room of choice. Then dig out your blankets and build yourself a cosy little nest to settle down in for the night.

Snacks
If nutty scents are perfect for an autumnal ambiance, nutty flavours are perfect for snacks too. Consider a couple of hot chocolates with a pump of hazelnut syrup, or if you want a boozy twist, add a shot of Amaretto or Bailey’s. Pair your hot chocolate with toffee popcorn, chocolate Brazil nuts, or ginger biscuits – the things you wouldn’t have touched during the highs of August.
I always find that autumn is a good time to start thinking about a cheese board too. So, if you wanted to make your cosy autumn night in particularly decadent, consider snacking on some brie, or melted Camembert.
Entertainment
Lastly, what is a cosy night in without quality entertainment? Back in the old days, it might have been time to tune in to The X Factor, or I’m A Celebrity but now with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney +, there’s a wealth of films and series you can get your teeth into.
Why not get into the Halloween spirit early and cosy up watching a great horror movie or series? Or go for an old favourite you haven’t seen in a few years, and let that warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia make you feel cosy.
